Stress is a funny thing.   At times, it can motivate us to start a task or get a job done.  Stress, in small doses, is not bad.   On the other hand, stress can push us into a head space where we feel overwhelmed or even panicked.    How do you know when stress is having a negative impact?

  • Monitor your heart rate and blood pressure - increases in one or both over a prolonged period of time is unhealthy

  • Digestive concerns - upset stomach, nausea, and vomiting can all be signs of chronic anxiety

  • Muscle aches - tension in the upper body; specifically the back, neck, shoulders and head

As humans, stress is universal.   We all experience it at various times and at all kinds of levels.  But when stress takes its toll on the body, we need to implement techniques for stress management.

  • Spend time outside.  Nature is a free resource!

  • Accept - Choose - Take Action:  Accept what is working for you, choose to grow peace of mind, and let go of the struggles that have you feeling stuck

  • Recognize you can’t control everything.  This is a simple thought but it’s challenging!

  • Breathing, meditation, and progressive muscle relaxation are all excellent ways to incorporate the body into letting go of a stress response.  YouTube offers many free scripts for meditation and muscle relaxation.

  • Practice self care.   Exercise, pay attention to your sleep routine, and nurture relationships with those around you. Self care doesn't have to be expensive.

  • Recognize when the stress is having a negative impact on your daily life and find a mental health counselor who can help you work through your struggles.
