Farewell to Summer!

Back to school means changes for everyone. No more sleeping in and grazing from the pantry throughout the day. The return to the school schedule is one that takes time for adjustment. Below are some tips to consider as you and your family approach the new school year!

  • Consider starting the school routine a week or two before the first day - this means waking up and going to bed at consistent times.
  • If you’re new to the school, inquire if your child will have an opportunity to tour the campus and/or meet teachers before the first day - familiarity may provide reassurance on the first day of school.
  • As an adult, be mindful of your own anxieties and stress. Sometimes the transition from summer back to school can be hectic. Remain calm and keep from projecting your worries onto your children.
  • Provide opportunities for your child to share his/her concerns. Find a quiet time when you can have one-on-one time to allow for questions. Normalize how they feel and validate their concerns.
  • Celebrate the end of summer! Reflect on the highs and lows. What memories were made over the summer months?
  • Write out goals/hopes/wishes for the new school year. Having something to work towards can create excitement and positive anticipation for everyone.
